| History
Captain Bearse House was built by a Yarmouth Port Pastor, The Reverend Thomas Smith in 1721. He sold the House around 1754 to Captain John Bearse who converted the private residence into a Tavern and Lodging House. It was the third Tavern opened in Yarmouth Port.
Captain Bearse asked his Son in Law, Joseph Bassett to be the Innkeeper for the Tavern. Upon John Bearse's death, Susannah Bassett (Grand Daughter) inherited the Tavern and Lodging House. Women were not allowed to own property at the time and the Tavern was turned over to her Husband, Elisha Doane.
Squire Doane, as they called him, sold shares in the Tavern to the Public, and
wide spread the reputation along the East Coast. Doane's Tavern became a popular meeting place and was known to house wealthy travelers as well as the Pony Express. The West Parlor still has the secret hiding place of Libations prohibited in the Temperance period. In the mid to late 1800's the Tavern was re converted and hosted the first Public Library in Yarmouth Port. |
